NB 105: Jemseg River Bridge closed
« on: August 15, 2017, 06:58:42 pm »
The Jemseg River Bridge on NB105 is no longer shown on OSM or Google. It appears to be closed indefinitely permanently.

CBC: Jemseg Bridge closed for repairs after inspection

CBC: Closed Jemseg Bridge may not be repaired, Roger Melanson says
Quote
Transportation Minister Roger Melanson says the bridge, on Route 105, was closed "because of safety reasons" and that it would cost about $3 million to fix.
"It may not be the right investment to do at this time because of our financial situation," he said.
"We're assessing the situation now as we speak."
Melanson says the government has two options.
"One is to invest and retrofit this bridge, or to, I guess, eliminate this bridge and get rid of this asset. We haven't made that decision yet."

NB DOT: Bridges to be decommissioned
Quote
The department is decommissioning the bridge and implementing measures to ensure the safety of the public. These precautionary measures include removing the spans at each end of the structure and constructing cul-de-sacs to allow for traffic turning. The spans are anticipated to be removed before the end of 2016 and the bridge is presently barricaded and closed to all traffic.

CBC: Jemseg Bridge decommissioning set to start
Quote
The Jemseg Bridge was closed in May 2015 due to safety concerns and will now be taken permanently out of service through the removal of the spans on each end.
I guess this indicates a decision to "eliminate this bridge and get rid of this asset", though I haven't found anything on the 'net about demolishing the main structure.

Shapefiles:
The following segment was included in the 6.0 shapefiles (dated 2015-10-19), and removed from the 7.0 shapefiles (dated 2016-10-21):

The existing route on either side is in place as before, with RTNUMBER1 = 105.
8.0 shapefiles, dated 2017-05-10, show the same thing.

Split!
NB105 should be split into two segments. Similar to what happened to IN912.

NB DOT map books:
The 2016 Designated Highways Map does not (yet) reflect the removal of the bridge.

Online maps:
OSM & Google have the western segment going cold at the NB2(333) EB ramps. On OSM, the old alignments get a text label, no shield.
OSM: The eastern segment follows the north end of NB695 from the end of the NB2(339) EB loop ramp. A bit suggestive of an EB thru routing, but that could just be the whim of the OSM contributor.
Google is less conclusive; the interchange connector road has no shields on it, neither 115 nor 695.
HERE: Same soup, different flavor.
I have to wonder whether the people editing the maps just went by the detour signage. (Note the NB105 shield in the background of the latter.)

Segment ends?
It's not clear how much of the roadway remains NB105, or if any has been downgraded, whether the eastern segment is still 105, renumbered, unnumbered, or what.
I can't pin down where the bridge spans were removed or the cul-de-sacs constructed. (I think I can see barricades in Google Satellite view.)

I'll go with cutting out the smallest segment of the existing route I can, and use the endpoints from the shapefiles.
Should any of this need adjusting in the future (endpoints, renumber, delete, etc.), I can make further edits as new info comes in.

Endpoint labels:
*JemRivBri seems about the right way to go.
*JemRivBri_W in the western segment and *JemRivBri_E in the eastern segment
*JemRivBri_S in the southern segment and *JemRivBri_N in the northern segment (NS105 is signed North-South) could head off the possibility of a point label collision should these routes ever be merged back together, even though that seems unlikely. Better safe than sorry? Hey man... NH US1BypPor US1_S, ME US1BypPor US1_N... :P

Termini of missing segment in 8.0 shapefiles:
as opposed to termini of existing segment in 6.0 files (roughly?) corresponding to what was removed
Code: [Select]
Foo +Bar http://www.openstreetmap.org/?lat=45.824897&lon=-66.119673
Baz +Qux http://www.openstreetmap.org/?lat=45.828928&lon=-66.113497
O HAY look, the eastern one is the same! ;P
