Title: MD: MD-851 signed on two new BGSs MD-32 in Sykesville, but nowhere else.
Post by: tckma on January 05, 2018, 05:23:53 pm
MD: MD-851 has now been signed, but only on two BGSs on both sides of MD-32 on the Howard County side of the bridge near that intersection.  There are no reassurance markers posted on MD-851 itself.  The signs have been in place for about a year, but GMSV hasn't been updated to show them yet.

There is a picture of one of the new BGS assemblies in Wikipedia here (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Maryland_Route_851).

Google Maps (here (https://www.google.com/maps/place/Sykesville,+MD+21784/@39.3659114,-76.9623771,15.75z/data=!4m5!3m4!1s0x89c825a803d10e75:0x8485decf2c9e21dc!8m2!3d39.3737149!4d-76.9677566)) shows the correct routing of MD MD851 as shown on the latest SHA county inventories.  But the only signed reference are the two new BGS assemblies at MD MD851's southern terminus (intersection with MD MD32).

Should the route be added?

MD 32 has waypoints for both its northern and southern junctions with MD 851. Usually, if we're going to ignore a route for being unsigned, we'd avoid (or delete) any references to the un-route in other routes' files, so that's a puzzle.

I added MD 717 in Upper Marlboro in April 2016. IIRC, the only signage for that route was at its south end, on BGSes for MD 4. MD 717 is short, but its north end is at another state route, and the only signage for MD 717 on that route is a "TO MD 4" assembly.

EDIT:  MDRoads (http://www.mdroads.com/routes/840-859.html#md851) shows the now-signed MD 851 through Sykesville as one of eight former MD 32 segments (many MD 8xx routes are old alignments remaining in the state DOT's inventory). All the other segments are less than a mile long. I'll ignore the other segments, unless any of them turn out to be signed as well.

I can add MD 851 to the HB, if there is no objection.

Sparse signage is a step above no signage; routes have been added for less. I do not object.
